Jellybass Reviews

    •    "This is better than good, this is godlike goodness. Get it, go out and turn to jelly"

    •    "Its bass rich and packed with dubby wave postures, which are just enough for you all to disappear into the misty early hours"

    •    "The world of unsigned music can be an extremely boggy affair, scooting around for the odd gem usually results in ending up knee deep in grot. That’s pretty much why I stopped looking and tend to sit back and see what gets thrown my way. The theory here is that 9 times out of 10 people with the confidence to push their stuff are actually sitting on something good. So with that little fanfare over and done with I present to you: Jellybass! The brainchild of the whole affair remains a dark secret and is simply known as LoHz, a rather apt artist name for the onslaught that is this album. 10 tracks of pure low level bliss is what’s on offer and each one had its own little theme. Personal favourite Vulgar teases with a live style bassline and swinging brass before descending into a disgustingly groovy electro bassline. Loop Da Loop is also an absolutely massive tune and pretty much sums up the groove and intention of the whole album. A very big dub influence is felt on many tracks and the ease of each groove that drops is made all the better by not having to drop into hi-speed breaks. So Flat Eric struts up to your car and shoots you in the face, GTA style. He nicks your car and goes to pick up Leftfield before going on a complete rampage through DnB, Breaks and Hip-Hop with a fucking huge gun. Luckily LoHz are nearby and waste no time in smashing Eric with a 50 pound lump hammer before feasting on his yellow guts. If you can actually imagine this happening then you probably don’t need any help in twisting your mind. For all other people I seriously suggest you get yourselves over to http://www.jellybass.co.uk where you can preview the album and buy it direct."

         Death To Spies
    •    Death To Spies are proud to present the wonderful talents of DJ Chix & this; his first outing on DTS namely 'Curls' Written & produced by Chix, vocals performed by Seren.
"Curls opens with a Funky drum break sitting hand in glove with the infectious & catchy baseline which together provide a solid foundation for the brass licks & of course the wonderful lead vocal - provided by Seren. It's this vocal that really gives the track it's very unique & unusual sound indeed. The mood shifts seamlessly from one state of mind to another making the seven or so minutes of 'Curls' completely bearable. I can hear elements of Jazz, Ska & Reggae all mixed together for the digital age, but then again you may hear something else. Enjoy"

Wessex Scene 'The Edge' Album review
    •    "Highlights of the album include "Soca Funk" offering a heavily Latin based track, with soulful lyrics. "Barrasic Bass" with its epic orchestral sound accompanied by superb drum programming and melodic flute. "Pennsylvania" combines a clever mix of swing and breakbeat, which offers the listener an inspiring, fresh sound. Chix’s programming and production skills are outstanding while the albums construction is well thought-out."

    •    "Overall I just can't find a fault with it, DJ Chix has clearly put much time and effort into this and has brought together some great musicians and singers. Everything down to the CD design has been well thought of"

Southscene 'Southampton's Local Webzine' Album review
    •    "Chix has delivered the goods here and apart from my lyrical quibbles aside, this is a great record. The programming is superb and the production equally so. For anyone wanting some quality dance music that isn’t going to tax the brain too much, but isn’t going to insult your intelligence at the same time, then look no further"

Klove (London DJ and Freelance Writer) Album Review
    •    "Transformer is the second outing for Chix's own music, although there are a few mix compilations floating around attached to his several residencies on the south coast where the boy rips it up.
  1. Like the robot toys of the same name, the album proves itself to be adept at being two things at once. Many tunes on Transformer would sit well in a party breaks set, but there's also something about the album's pop sensibilities that makes it worth a listen in the car too. 'Proper' instrument-playing guests play a big part, giving it a so-called hip house flavour on 'Flute track' - no bad thing considering the resurgence of this sound over the last eight months or so.
  2. In fact, there's quite a few guests, which perhaps goes to show that as an artist Chix is passionate about collaborating. Vocal performances are good, and in some places, as on the downtempo highlight 'Curo', really inhabit the tune. But 'Planets' is undermined by rather too enthusiastic vocal delivery, where it should be shouty or deadpan, and nowhere in between. Whilst I'm sure Rocka G's lyrics will work well with the music in a live context, they don't always translate on record. You feel that, like the Freestylers' first album, the breaks elements here will ignite in front of an audience.
  3. In the privacy of your own head, more of Transformer should step out of the shadow of the vocals and take more chances, as it's strong enough to do that. This shows as, after 'Curo', highlights come toward the instrumental end of the album. 'Pennsylvania' fastens nice d'n'b breaks to big band samples without losing any heads-down feeling. '4 Minute Chemical' sees Chix venture back into a complex leftfield territory that suits really well.
  4. This is a multi-faceted album that wears its influences on its sleeve. It touches so well on so many different sounds that you can't help feeling Chix should focus on whichever interests him most, and mine the subtleties of those more fully. At some future point those diverse sounds will integrate and grow together, at which point Chix will be huge."

    •    "The flow from 'Jump up' (that's an order, tune title AND a description) to head nodding breaks; dark strings; New Wave and beyond never jars and it is this range of influences and sounds on Transformer that make it an unusual thing in dance music: an artist album that can be listened to and relished in it's entirety."

        Bex (Audacity) Album Review
    •    "(Transformer) is a diverse collections of music and influences that is strangely unified and complete. The whole album is a really good and enjoyable listen. Chix shows himself to be a great musical craftsman and a superb producer"
